Watch Night 2017

On this day in 1770, America’s first-known “watch-night” service was held at St. George’s Methodist Church in Philadelphia.

The Black Community

On This date in 1862 the first Watch Night Services were celebrated in Back communities in America.

The Watch Night service can be traced back to gatherings also known as “Freedom’s Eve.” On that night, Black slaves and free blacks came together in churches and private homes all across the nation awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation actually had become law.  At the stroke of midnight, it was January 1, 1863; all slaves in the Confederate States were declared legally free. When the news was received, there were prayers, shouts and songs of joy as many people fell to their knees and thanked God.

“Watch Night Service” in the Black Church in America symbolizes the historical fact, that on the night of Dec. 31, 1862 during the Civil War, free and freed blacks living in the Union States gathered at churches and/or other safe spaces, while thousands of their enslaved black sisters and brothers stood, knelt and prayed on plantations and other slave holding sites in America — waiting for President Abraham Lincoln to sign the Emancipation Proclamation into law. The Emancipation Proclamation legally recognized that the Civil War was fought for slavery.

There’s another explanation of the Watch Night Service.  It is said that the slaves in the Old Suth would gather in desperation on the last night of the year to await news regarding which of them would be sold on New Year’s Day to satisfy their masters’ outstanding debts.  Which is unlikely considering they would have no reason to wait for January 1st to sell slaves to pay off creditors.

The practice may have begun with the Moravians, a small Christian denomination in Europe held in 1733 on the estate of a German count.

On this day in 1770, America’s first-known “watch-night” service was held at St. George’s Methodist Church in Philadelphia.

Watch Night services are a tradition started by John Wesley, the founder of the United Methodist Church. In all honesty, he borrowed the tradition from Moravian Christians that used them as a late-night vigil for the faithful; however, as time marched on, John molded this into a New Year’s Eve service where Christians were invited to review the year, confess to sins and pray for the year ahead. These services remain in Methodist worship manuals as “Covenant Renewal Services.

What are you watching for on this 2016 – 2017 Watchnight?

Why Won’t He Call Me Anymore?

Use me, how could he use me when I so ready to go up the hill with him and “do the do!

jack-and-jillDo you remember the old nursery rhyme about Jack and Jill – well there’s a lil’ more to it than a cute nursery rhyme recited to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. ?

The real story began with the beheading of King Louis XVI who lost his crown and Queen Marie Antoinette who went tumbling down after him – kinda sorta.  You know those two who’s ostentatious wealth perhaps drive their sucky attitude towards the poor.  Remember the famous statement, “Let them eat cake”? Well, that’s another story all in itself.

There’s another rumor about a couple back in the 1690’s who would sneak up the hill to be alone and you know –  “do the do”.  The girl gets pregnant and the boy dies from a falling rock and the girl dies after giving birth.  All that from a nursery rhyme! True or not I don’t know…

Why!!! doesn’t he call me anymore? Well,  there are the obvious answers, he doesn’t want to be bothered, he doesn’t like me or find me interesting anymore, or perhaps he just wanted to use me!

Use me, how could he use me when I so ready to go up the hill with him and “do the do!

Oops we’re not ready to tell all that truth, we are not ready to take on the responsibility of having participated in a manner that would surely execute our fantasy wedding dress dreams!

Wedding dress, yup we all do it, have done and will do it again.  We see Mr. Could be standing there looking oh so debonair.  Or we see Mr. Ruff Neck rolling ’round the way with those Vogue rims on that cream-colored Cadillac and in a fleeting moment, we don’t even notice it when it happens, were damn near oblivious to our own inner workings as a woman!

bamThere it is, the story of our lives!

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water;
Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after;

Actually, it went a lil’ like this;
Jill saw Jack up on the hill;
Jill was all warm and fuzzy looking at Jack;
Jack was on the phone;
Jack had not noticed Jill;
Jill saw Jack’s friend;
Jack’s friend introduced Jill to Jack;
Jill was still warm and fuzzy;
Jack being who he was felt Jill’s warm and fuzziness from the car or cell phone;
After some time Jill allowed Jack to feel her warm and fuzziness;
Jack had skills, and made Jill feel really really warm;
Jill had been in a bad relationship previously so anything would have been better than what she had;
Jack did and said things that Tyrone never would;
Jill feels warm and fuzzy all the time now!
Jill never asked Jack if they could stay on the hill – she assumed it would happen because  Jack never said I don’t like it here on the hill with you;
Jack had warm and fuzzy feelings for others…
When Jack shows Jill who he really is, Jill is furious;

Remember Jill never asked Jack if they could stay on the hill;
Jill had already bought her wedding dress and had the guest list prepared – in her visions of things to come:
Jack falls down and breaks his crown, Jill went tumbling after him;
Jack keeps being Jack and Jill keeps tumbling…right into aggravated rage, anger, hurt,  and frustration.
Jill doesn’t realize that she should have had a conversation with Jack about the arrangements on the hill, instead,  she begins to talk “ish” about Jack to her friends and maybe his friends too.

I’m thinking of a song right here, “I’ll bust the windows out your car…” oh nevermind…

Jill is now consumed with her loss of Jack, she needs something to relieve the pain, instead,  she finds those crazy memes to post all over social media as if Jack can read.

Why does she call his phone 32 times in row as if he’s going to answer and if he does why does she get mad and his response ____________________________________?

Jill doesn’t know she’s (emotionally) sick and requires the help of the Comforter, to help navigate her valley of pain.

Until Jill acknowledges her current state she will place blame and try to make Jack feel like dung.

Proverbs 18:22New King James Version (NKJV)

22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, (Not she who seduces him, or she who get’s involved with a married man, or she who gives up the goodies before the trial”.  It reads “He” who finds…
And obtains favor from the Lord.

Medicaid & CHIP in North Carolina – Family Planning = Birth Control!

Updated – Medicaid & CHIP in North Carolina – Family Planning = Birth Control!

North Carolina has not expanded Medicaid coverage to low-income adults and or the homeless

January 5, 2107 – Update –

According to The Christian Monitor – North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) said Wednesday he plans to expand Medicaid to cover an additional 650,000 people, despite his predecessor having signed a law that expressly prohibits such a move.

Republican State Senate Leader Phil Berger described the governor’s plan as a quote “brazenly illegal attempt to force” Medicaid expansion upon state taxpayers.

Wow, “brazenly illegal” right after attempting to “brazenly” strip the new Governor of North Carolina of his duties – well that’s in another story see – rejection.

Seriously folks, I would like to start with some moments of awareness.  Did you know that in the Middle Ages –  a time between the fall of Rome and the beginning of the Renaissance in the 14th century, mental illness was described as one having a possession of evil spirits?  Interestingly enough the King James Bible states from the book of Corinthians – Wherefore whosoever shall eat of this bread, and drink this cut of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.  But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.  For this cause many are weak and sickly amoung you, and many , the author, is indicating that those that do not believe when taking communion shall fall to sickness in the body.  There are folks today like Christian Scientists that believe only in prayer and meditation to relieve all sickness vs. making a doctor visit.

I’m not so sure that homeless men and women (including Veterans) mother’s and children in the beautiful state of North Carolina are either Christian Scientists or even believe in prayer and meditation to relieve their mental and/or physical health issues.  Secondly it was the duty of the King (Governor, Senator, etc.)   to protect the land of the idiots and provide them with the basic necessities of life.

The King who would (in the 21st century be known as the “State”) would take or should be taking the responsibilities of the citizens that fall under the mental illness and/or in need of healthcare category.   Additionally, the Elizabethan Poor Laws and the Poor Law of 1601 can fall under the category of DSS, DCF or Medicaid.

The Title 19 program stems from the 13th century. The idea that relief for the poor was the responsibility of the Church yet how many churches can actually show proof positive that they are financially involved in helping with the fudiciary, judiciary or medical needs of the poor.  Sure they have annual coat drives, food pantries, chicken dinners and raffle tickets, but when was the last time a church in your neighborhood took up a collection for wound care or cash payments for medicine for uninsured children and their families?

It would appear that folks have always been thinking of ways to assist those in need. It also appears that perhaps that only happens outside of North Carolina’s uninsured population.

Original Story- Medicaid  CHIP in North Carolina – Family Planning = Birth Control!

Medicaid is a health and long-term care coverage program that was enacted in 1965. The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was established in 1997 to provide new coverage opportunities for children in families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid, but who cannot afford private coverage. Both Medicaid and CHIP are administered by states within broad federal guidelines and jointly funded by the federal government and states.

 This page outlines key characteristics of Medicaid and CHIP in North Carolina and provides documents and information relevant to how the programs have been implemented by North Carolina within federal guidelines.

Period Enrollment
Avg July-Sept 2013 1,595,952
Total September 2016 2,020,076

As of September 2016, North Carolina has enrolled 2,020,076 individuals in Medicaid and CHIP — a net increase of 26.57% since the first Marketplace Open Enrollment Period and related Medicaid program changes in October 2013. North Carolina has adopted one or more of the targeted enrollment strategies outlined in guidance CMS issued on May 17, 2013, designed to facilitate enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP.

The Federally-facilitated marketplace (FFM) offers coverage in North Carolina.

In federal fiscal year (FFY) 2014, North Carolina voluntarily reported 12 of 18 frequently reported health care quality measures in the CMS Medicaid/CHIP Child Core Set. North Carolina voluntarily reported 0 of 10 frequently reported health care quality measures in the CMS Medicaid Adult Core Set.

North Carolina has not expanded coverage to low-income adults… Here’s the thing a homeless woman who is over the age of having children receives 1 physical exam a year and access to birth control – they call it family planning?!
