Healthcare
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, is a comprehensive health care reform law enacted in March 2010. The main goals of the ACA include expanding health insurance coverage, reducing the overall costs of health care, and improving the quality and accessibility of health care for individuals and families. The ACA introduced various provisions, such as the expansion of Medicaid, the establishment of health insurance marketplaces, the prohibition of insurance companies from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions, and the provision of subsidies to help individuals and families afford health insurance. Additionally, the ACA includes measures to promote preventive care and wellness, as well as improvements to Medicare. Overall, the ACA aimed to address the challenges of the existing healthcare system in the United States and make health insurance more accessible and affordable for millions of Americans.
Folk complain that because of the ACA their premiums went and they have to pay more for insurance.
The Truth
The premiums were raised for several reasons:
(1) The premiums at your place of work are based on the health of each individual – if the folks at your job are always going to the doctor the premiums will be higher. That is why gym memberships and healthy alternatives are offered to help bring your premiums down.
(2) The premiums went up because folk that REALLY need healthcare now had access – with more folk getting insurance and now individuals that just got hired had a condition already they could now continue their care:
(3) Because the folk that needed care increased physicians could no longer go and play golf on Wednesday because there were too many patients;
(4) To maintain their board certification physicians are required to see a certain percentage of Medicaid and Medicare patients – neither of those plans pays as well as commercial insurance like Cigna or United Healthcare – hence premiums were raised to keep physicians In-Network.
Lastly calling the ACA – Obamacare is a derogatory term – Republicans invented the term “Obamacare” as a way to denigrate the Affordable Care Act.
