    What’s something most people don’t understand?

    Affirmative Action

    Affirmative action refers to policies and programs aimed at increasing the representation of historically disadvantaged groups in areas such as employment, education, and business. These measures are designed to address past and present discrimination by providing opportunities to people from underrepresented groups. The specific implementation and legal implications of affirmative action vary by country.

    Affirmative action is not a form of preferential treatment for unqualified individuals. It is not designed to unduly disadvantage any particular group, nor is it intended to guarantee outcomes or quota-based representations. Instead, it aims to level the playing field and address systemic barriers that have historically hindered the opportunities of underrepresented groups.

    Affirmative action can provide opportunities for qualified black individuals in various scenarios. For instance, in the education sector, a black student with strong academic potential and qualifications may benefit from affirmative action when applying to universities or colleges to counteract historical barriers to equal educational opportunities. Additionally, in the workplace, a qualified black candidate may benefit from affirmative action when competing for employment opportunities in fields where they have been traditionally underrepresented. These measures aim to address systemic barriers and promote diversity and inclusivity.

    In other words, I apply for a management position, I have achieved an MBA and 1 of 2 scenarios happens:

    (1) My resume is immediately thrown in the circular receptacle because my name is Shenaqia Lexus Johnson:

    (2) My resume is not rejected, I got the interview and all went well; Ms. Lillith Genevier got an interview she has achieved a bachelor’s degree in political science. Ms. Genevier gets the job and she’s not qualified.

    Most folk think Affirmative Action is a way for Black and Brown folk to get jobs they are NOT qualified for.

    What could you do less of?

    Think, I might do well to think a little less. On one particular job, often when asked a question I would pause. During my pause – I’m thinking of the question, why the question is asked, the source of the question (who is asking), the possible outcomes and consequences of the answer I will give. This often infuriated folk mostly because when I did respond they had no idea no idea what I was talking about.

    A few months ago a friend suggested I read the, “The Curse of Knowledge” I did, much to my surprise I found a lot of reasons why I should remain humble with the level of knowledge I possess and continue to grow if you will.

    Describe your most ideal day from beginning to end.

    My most ideal day from beginning to end goes a little like this:

    • I get up without the alarm;
    • I thank Him for waking me, and ask Him to show me what He wants me to do today;
    • I have breakfast as I watch the news;
    • I teach someone something;
    • I learn something;
    • I reach back and help someone get up out of pain and misery;
    • I encourage someone to believe that he is worthy just as he is and that money, fame, and/or fortune do not define or validate anyone’s worth;
    • I would be able to spend just a few more minutes or a day with my dad before he left this place;
    • I would thank Him for giving me one more day to do His will, thank Him for the time I had with my dad and the wonderful memories of my dad (his birthday is coming up soon, hence the consideration in this post), and thank Him for the family I still have;
    • I would turn the light out and quietly pray that this day would actually happen one day!

    Think back on your most memorable road trip.

    We were taking my daughter on my first vacation to Walt Disney. We knew it was going to be a long ride, with my daughter my girlfriend, her mom, and 3 adopted children. We first prepared to share the driving. Leaving CT we got stuck in NY traffic for about 4 hours we had just moved past the Bronx and I said well my time is up, right after I finished eating a chicken wing and threw it out the window and it almost went in the window of the car in the other lane.

    Moving right along, we get to North Carolina to stay for a day of rest and by then we had run out of selter water. We went to the grocery story and we ran up and down the asiles considering we were unfamiliar with the layout of the stores there, – three grocery stores later we hit the jackpot – they had every flavor you could think of and we got addicted grape fruit seltzer.

    Finally we get to Florida – of course laying out our funds we incorporated going to a presentation on purchasing an executive suite for a week or two as long as it wasn’t already rented, but that’s another topic. We decide to go out early and have breakfast each morning and go to the park later in day when the noon day sun has started to set -the heat was unbearable. This was a must do vacation for my daughter for a plethora of reasons and it needed to be a vacation not a visit to our relatives or a funeral.

    Of course at my daughter’s age and in my younger days I chose to ride the rides with her. We got on a ride (I forgot the name) it was a subway ride during a water main break. I didnt’ read the information or the name of the ride, I heard, “Mommy let’s get on this one” and we got on the ride, So we are sitting on the ride, and it seems to be moving – when all of a sudden the gush of water comes in from my right and hop out screaming for everyone to get out – save your lives!!! Well I just embellished a little, I didn’t say “…save your lives” but I did scream get out. My friend Jackie looked and smiled and reminded me it was just a ride!

    This was my most memorable trip – 4 hour traffic, chicken wing out the window, free tickets by watching a presentation we were not interested in, searching for seltzer water like drug addicts (no hard feelings – I mean before an addict got clean), lastly so engrossed in a ride the imagery seemed real.

    The absolute best was – me and my daughter went on a vacation together!

    Are you a good judge of character?

    Character refers to the combination of qualities and features that distinguishes an individual. • What’s something you believe everyone should know?

    What’s something you believe everyone should know?

    There are a few things I think everyone should know, but some are more important than others. The list below is not in order of importance, just a list as I think of them, here goes…

    Health

    Take your finger and rub it behind your ear, if it smells then you forgot to clean that area. A good test for children.

    Pastors

    If they are still passing the plate for tithing and/or preaching on wealth and prosperity – they may not have been called to preach – they called the realtor to find a place to be a speaker.

    Democracy

    If we really lived in a democracy – the person with the most votes would win – there would be no need for fund-raising. A true democracy is a system of government in which the power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or through freely elected representatives. In a true direct democracy, all laws, bills, and even court decisions are voted on by all citizens.

    However, as we have seen recently there are different types of democracies such as:

    A. representative democracy – citizens elect a representative to make decisions on their behalf;

    B. constitutional democracy – the powers of the government are limited by a constitution;

    C. The phrase “separation of church and state” appears nowhere in the Constitution, and the Founding Fathers saw nothing wrong with having religion in American culture.

    What makes a good neighbor?

    1. You rarely hear them;

    2. They never need to borrow anything;

    3. They are nosey – only when it counts;

    4. They read all your posts, they share them, they engage and get others to engage and follow you because they know you’re a newcomer and need help to get your blog running – they’ll be supportive even if after 6 months – to a year it’s a failed blog.

    5. They will see your typos and tell you. I literally just saw 2, that happens ALL the time I find errors after I submit – ugh!!

    The Beginning

  • When was the first time you really felt like a grown up (if ever)?

    When was the first time you really felt like a grown up (if ever)?

    1. Paid my first bill;
    2. Received my first speeding ticket;
    3. The day I was holding the sweetest creation I made, my daughter, I raised her up just above my head and she began to drool (just a tad) as she smiled and I didn’t flinch – my dad looked at me and said, “…you’re just gonna let her drool in your mouth…” all three of us smiled!
    4. Realizing my value and self-worth is more important than fixing you;
    5. When I discovered that there was joy and peace in letting go vs. holding on – then discovering the box was empty;
    6. Open the door WIDE when people walk out of my life,  smile at the good times, gently close the door, get a snack, watch a good Netflix movie, and carry on…
    7. Having conversations with God…

    What are your morning rituals? What does the first hour of your day look like?

    Get up, thank God for another day, turn on the local news, make coffee, get ready for work.

    It’s the simplicity for me…
